Business takes a bullet with ammo shortage

Business is down for one local gun shop, where concerns over the ammunition shortage have actually discouraged some would-be gun owners.

Sales have slumped by 25-percent at the Duck Creek Armory in Davenport.

But, it’s not because a desire for gun ownership is lacking according to the shop’s owner, Jason Bitting.

“I know of many instances in which people have mentioned that they’d like to buy a firearm, however, they’re not going to because of ammunition,” said Bitting.

Like most other gun shops, a cap has been placed at Duck Creek on the amount of ammo customers can buy at 100 rounds per transaction.

“We rarely do get in ammunition,” he said. “It’s been very difficult getting in ammunition and when we do get it in, we try to spread the wealth as much as possible.”

Crews to Make Halligan Building an Apartment Complex

Davenport City Leaders will discuss a rezoning request for the Halligan Coffee Company Building Wednesday night.

City Council documents show the building was built back in 1907. Downtown Developer Joe Erenberger wants to re-build the factory.

The factory houses the American Food Service Equipment company now. The company recently said it would move to make way for the new development.

Erenberger wants to build a $7 million complex with 45 units inside. He also applied for state grants to do the project. Erenberger wants to keep the brick walls and warehouse look in tact once the building opens again.

Construction is supposed to start this summer or fall. No word on when construction will be complete.

Supporters of Credit Island Want Fire-Damaged Lodge Back

Supporters of Credit Island Park in Davenport say they want the Lodge back after it was badly damaged by fire earlier this month.

The fire happened on May 2nd, 2013 and could be seen from downtown, Davenport three miles away. The Fire Marshal says the Lodge was burning for 30 minutes before someone in Rock Island noticed it and called the Davenport Fire Department.

The result was a lot of damage and now a newly-formed Credit Island Task Force will decide what’s next.

“I have a lot of respect for Credit Island,” says Davenport Resident Mike Peppers. “I would like to see the Lodge rebuilt.”

But it’s not as easy as Peppers makes it sound and during a community meeting on Tuesday, May 14th, 2013, First Ward Alderman Nathan Brown explained why.
